  • Quality of life as a central quality factor in care facilities: The Leading Nursing Homes (LNH) approach

The quality of care facilities is traditionally measured using medical and structural indicators. However, a holistic assessment must go far beyond this. Research findings show that for residents, not only nursing care but also aspects such as respectful interaction with staff, a homely atmosphere, high-quality care, a wide range of activities and a self-determined daily structure are decisive for their quality of life. (Cohen & Sugar, 1991; Brown, Bowling & Flynn, 2004)

Studies show that the location and management of a care home have a significant influence on the quality of life of residents (Winkler, 2020). Satisfaction surveys alone are not sufficient to measure the actual quality of care and the environment in institutions. Rather, quality of life must be based on experience-based criteria and surveyed independently of care staff or administrative interests. In addition, targeted survey methods are required to give cognitively impaired residents a reliable voice. (Estermann & Kneubühler, 2008)

This is precisely where Leading Nursing Homes (LNH) comes in: With an innovative quality model that goes beyond conventional medical metrics, LNH focuses on the actual quality of life of residents. Using a differentiated system of indicators that integrates social-emotional, nursing and organizational dimensions, LNH creates a new, scientifically sound basis for evaluating care quality. Among other things, this includes direct questioning of residents and staff in order to systematically incorporate their experiences and perceptions into the quality assessment. LNH is thus setting new standards for human-centered and future-oriented care that is geared towards the actual needs of residents.
